Frequently Asked Questions

How much can I expect to save by switching to solar?

The saving one can expect from a solar system is dependent on the system installed and how one uses it. On average, you can expect a saving of between 30 - 50 % of your total electricity bill. How best to use your system will be explained once an EFA Solar technician has installed your system for you.

How does a mixing valve work and why would I want one?

A mixing valve simply mixes cold water into the hot mains outlet before it reaches your taps. By having a mixing valve the water in the tank can be heated to a higher temperature thereby storing more solar energy while protecting against scalding hot water.

Will I have hot water at night and in winter?

Provided you have a back-up heater with the appropriate timer setting, you will always have hot water. EVT collectors work off radiation so even without visible sunlight they are effective.

What about maintenance, do I need to do any to my system?

The systems sold by EFA solar require minimal maintenance. To ensure system efficiency it is recommended that cleaning steps be followed once a year. EFA Solar offers a maintenance plan at a very affordable rate. To find out more, ask either your technician or sales person.

What is the lifespan of my system?

A system should easily last up to 15 years. However guarantees differ depending on the product.

I have heard of this thing called payback period, exactly what is it?

The payback period is the period it takes for the solar system to pay you back your initial investment after which you effectively get free hot water. EFA Solar systems have a payback period of 3 years in comparison to a normal geyser which you constantly have to pay for.

How much will it cost me to have my system fitted?

Installation costs vary according to your house set-up and the type of system installed. On average the cost should range from R4500 to R6500 however a final quote can only be given once the site visit has been conducted.

What is the difference between a SABS and non-SABS certified system from EFA Solar?
